Chronic Geek!Fail: Or, I Was an Adolescent History Hipster

I'm still on the fence about how I feel about last night's SPN ep, although I made dolphin noises at the TV every time there was a subliminal Titanic detail thrown across the screen, like the E.J. Smith travel agency and the clock, the CLOCK showing the time the Titanic struck the iceberg.
I was a big Titanic geek in my childhood, okay?
I said this to Katrina as we were watching Show last night when she demanded to know why I knew all of the things.
"And it had nothing to do with the movie. This was before the movie even came out."
"So, what you're saying is that you geeked out about the Titanic before it was cool to geek out about the Titanic?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"So. You were like, a Titanic Hipster when you were ten years old?"
"If it makes you feel any better, I had like, no friends, because dragging a tome like Titanic: An Illustrated History out to the playground at recess tends to peg you as a freak."
"Good. I'm glad."
Right. Okay. So. The rest of this post pertains to boring RL. Apologies.
Lucy the Staypuft Marshmallow Car is at the body shop awaiting parts for repair. I've renamed him the Danger Magnet for the time being. Psycho!Bambi did about $3500 in damage: new fender, new hood, new front drivers side door, plus painting. Fuck you, Psycho!Bambi.
I'm slated to have the Danger Magnet back on the 26th. In the meantime, I borrowed Katrina's car, "The Tick", and on Monday, her mom is letting me borrow her Jeep, which Katrina and I named "The Divorce Settlement, Part 1."
We like to name cars, okay? Chrissy drives "Echo the Dolphin Car" because it's little and silver and the satellite radio antenna looks like a fin. My car before Lucy was named "Cthulhu" because...well it was a small Honda of questionable road-worthiness and I wanted to let it know that I still thought of it as a badass. Owen drives a blue Honda Fit that we call "The Mighty Bubble."
My brother refuses to let us name his car because, "You guys come up with stupid-ass names."
Whatever. Ass.
I completely rewrote the beginning of "Leap Year" while at work this week and mapped out the remainder of the storyline. It has gone off in a completely unintended direction, but I really really like it, and Case and Gertie are still totally Case and Gertie. I want to finish the rough draft by tomorrow night so I can spend the next two weeks revising. There's a deadline for a themed lit mag on the 30th that I think this new incarnation of "Leap Year" (currently renamed "With Honors") will be perfect for.
I'll post some crap as it comes together.
Chao, kids.

Date: April 16th, 2011 07:35 pm (UTC)My name is already an anagram of the word, and I'm going to put my self-fulfilling prophecy into motion.
I'm glad you don't have to pay the full $3500. <3
Also... naming cars is awesome. Dean can't really say that "my baby" is a name, but hey. It's cute.

Heee. I hope your weekend was nice! <3

Date: April 16th, 2011 07:39 pm (UTC)I previously had a white jeep and called it, "White Lightening" It had serious horsepower.
The one before that was an old, loud brown car that kept stalling. I had to get out and roll it onto the side of the road more times than I can remember. It's name was, "Rolling Brown Thunder"
Car before that was ... *coughs* Nevermind.
BUT I did have a "Titanic!" Can't remember the make, but it was one loooong ass car.

Date: April 17th, 2011 11:40 pm (UTC)My very first car was a super badly rusted '94 Cavalier. Like, I was constantly poking holes in the side of the thing because it was that bad (no, it didn't pass inspection. I asked the mechanic how to make it pass and he just laughed at me and shook his head.) and I named it "Rusty the Holey Rollin' Empire."
A Titanic! XD

Date: April 19th, 2011 02:55 pm (UTC)Ya know, I'm crap at sending feedback, but while I'm thinking of it, I wanted to tell ya, I love the "For Keeps" series. Even recced it on spnstoryfinders (http://spnstoryfinders.livejournal.com/6216926.html). ;-)
I was actually even thinking about the last story (timeline-wise) last night while going to sleep and had a thought. Did Sam know what Castiel was at the salvage yard for because Sam is tuned in to the angel partyline? Sure would be distracting. It put Anna in a mental hospital when we first met the character, after all.

Date: April 22nd, 2011 04:06 pm (UTC)You recced it! That's so exciting! Thank you so much!
To answer your question: For Keeps Sam can definitely see and hear more than your average person. I wrote a small blurb over at spnquotefic to try to explain it because I really want to delve deeper into just what Sam experiences everyday and why he is the way he is...but I'm a little bit scared to do it. I kind've like us all being in the dark like Dean. I'm worried that revealing too much about Sam would take away alot of what drives the (very flimsy) story.
BUT...I also feel like where For Keeps is at currently, has already made the point that it was intended to make: the wall comes down, Sam is broken, but Dean takes care of him, manages to have his own life at the same time, and things suck...but they're also really okay.
So...how many more stories telling that exact same story do I really need to write before it all gets a little redundant? (Personally, I will never NOT read a post-wall story that involves Sam being screwed up and Dean taking care of him...but if I justify it all with that logic, then really, the 'verse becomes some stagnant self-gratifying creation.
Wow. I'm ranting. TL;DR: Yes. Sam has links to the angel hotline. I wrote a small drabble about it: here (http://spnquotefic.livejournal.com/12313.html?view=813337#t813337). There will be more addressing this in the future...as soon as I can figure out how to write it. :D

Date: April 22nd, 2011 08:10 pm (UTC)It's worth it, if you can get it to work. ;-)

Woohoo! I read it and just loved it. That's interesting that Sam is able to understand Dean now. I wonder at the line, A person again, Dean tells him, Sam thinks. Has Sam spoken to Dean? Is he imagining Dean's saying it? Is he interpreting Dean's thoughts? It's just so interesting.
In answer to your question, So...how many more stories telling that exact same story do I really need to write before it all gets a little redundant?, at least a few more. ;-)
The question I think is most unanswered at the moment is where did the kitty come from? You could tell the tale from all sorts of POVs, maybe one we haven't heard from yet, like Bobby's or even the cat's. To use a Sammyism, there is a lot of lore about cats and the supernatural, in just about every culture.

Heee. Yeah. That's where I really have to sit and think and figure it all out. In my head, Sam knows who Dean is and (as of the time period where most of these stories take place) he knows who Bobby is too. Sam is not completely damaged that he is incapable of learning, developing relationships, or retaining information. But he is definitely altered, and I honestly don't foresee him ever completely recovering from his hell time.
But just what Sam understands is, at the moment, elusive to me. I'm currently working on a story that takes place between "Thursday" and "Drive All Night" that involves Dean's decision to move in with Bobby, and it really illustrates just how bad Sam was in the beginning. The Sam we see in "Ghost in the Machine" has recovered by leaps and bounds in comparison to his original state.
Oh, there will totally be a kitty-origin story at some point.
...there is a lot of lore about cats and the supernatural, in just about every culture.
I completely forgot about that! But I really like it. If the kitty origin ends up going that way...I will totally throw you all of the internet cupcakes.
My brain...you have fed it. And now it's thinking thinky thoughts about kitties. XD
I'm glad you liked "Favorite Son!" I keep meaning to link it to the main 'verse page. I wasn't sure if it was For Keeps canon at first, but I've pretty much changed my mind since writing it.

Date: April 23rd, 2011 12:22 am (UTC)Ooooooh!!! *makes grabby hands* Me wants!!!
That sounds awesome and totally not repetitive and self-indulgent, so don't even worry about that. See? You've got stuff to write in this 'verse. Go forth and create...or something like that, you know.
My brain...you have fed it. And now it's thinking thinky thoughts about kitties. XD
I have a black cat named Lucky, so I likes me the kitty cats, too.
I'd just be interested in the circumstances as Dean notes in "Ghost in the Machine" that not much catches Sam's attention so anything that does is good by him (badly paraphrased). Anyway, I'd like to know why it caught his attention and why it sticks with Sam.

Date: April 27th, 2011 04:31 pm (UTC)I love that you loved Titanic before the movie even came out... And it also makes me feel much better that Titanic at recess didn't really get a whole lot of action. Just because it's not fair when people turn out to be amazing way before they're old enough to be. Unfortunately I can't fangirl over Titanic WITH you, because I know almost zero facts about it, and while I love the movie, it wasn't life-changing.
Okay, and now I've begun reading your RL portion. I do have to say that I'm a bit bummed out. In my (very unnecessary and useless) opinion, cars are always female, but ... I can probably let that slide. And because I had this argument with an old friend, I'll just say why I believe this, other than having been raised on Home Improvement: Father Time (abstract = male) & Mother Earth (concrete = female).
But I adore the name you've given your car so never mind all that. (And the fact that I'm talking to you like we're going to be friends, I have no right, but I'm going to do it anyway and when you (probably) ignore me, I will just go away.)
That much damage from a deer... my GOD. That's such a mess.
